I can only do so many at a time. So spots are starting to fill up. I refuse to sacrifice the quality of time with each one of you so that I can give you the best interpretation and the best rebalancing customized protocol based on your results. So click the link below this episode that says 60 Day Integrative Health Protocol. Get all the details and secure your spot today. Before they all fill up, let's talk about the other half of the hair tissue mineral Analysis heavy metals, trace minerals, mineral ratios and oxidation rate. The HDMA looks at lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic and aluminum for toxic heavy metals. We know these are not good for us, and this test helps you pinpoint buildup that you might have in your system. We all have different detoxification profiles based on our genetic makeup, and sometimes we are not able to eliminate these things as quickly as other people. And so this can lead to toxic buildup. We also are exposed to heavy metals at a much higher rate than ever before in history. So the number of places where you can come in contact with these things have increased and therefore buildup will increase. Aluminum is definitely one of the most common toxicities, and we've been learning it's in everything from cookware to personal care products. Right. You're buying aluminum free deodorant, I hope, something that you're using daily. But all of these can be issues if too much of these metals are in the body. Lead can come from things like ceramic glazes, cigarette smoke, colored ink, food cans soldered with lead, some hair dyes, lead based paints, lead water pipes, leaded gasoline, manufacture of batteries, pesticide residues, and water contaminated with lead from industrial waste. Children can also be born with elevated lead passed through the placenta from their mother. So this is unfortunately something that most of our children are being born with at this point. Diets deficient in calcium, magnesium or iron increase lead absorption. So this is really crucial to pay attention to. If our minerals are not optimized, not only does that cause issues on that front, but it can also lead to us absorbing more of toxic things like lead. Blood lead testing is not accurate in detecting chronic lead toxicity because within 30 days of exposure, most lead is removed from the blood and stored in body tissue. For this reason, hair testing has been shown by the EPA to be a better method for lead testing, but it also may take several tests to see because it stores in the body tissues. And I mentioned this last time briefly at the beginning of the episode, saying that sometimes we can't tell right away if these heavy metals are a problem. They may not show up on this test, but because of our mineral ratios, we may be able to see where these heavy metals have stored in our body and are causing other issues. Right. Sometimes we have to start a heavy metal detox in order for us to see it being excreted on a hair tissue mineral analysis. But this isn't just a fault of this test. It's just the way that heavy metals operate in the body. They store there and they want to be there for a long time. The list of impacts that lead has on the body is long. I'm not even going to go through it here. You can look it up if you want to see what lead does, but it affects everything from blood, bones and brain to energy levels, kidney function, mineral deficiencies and the thyroid. There are implications of lead poisoning on every single one of our body systems. We know that this is not a good one. We've heard about this one before. I mean, we know that all of these metals are not good, but we need to be really pinpointing these things as soon as possible to try to do a heavy metal detox to get them out of our system. Mercury is next up and can come from dental amalgam or silver fillings, deepwater fish like tuna and swordfish, contaminated drinking water, mercurial, fungicides, medications like diuretics, mercurychrome, preparation H, those kinds of things. Contact lens solution, occupational exposure from the manufacturer of things like floor waxes, adhesives, fabric softeners paper and chlorine really need to be careful. Mercury, I would say, is another very common one, especially if you are someone who does eat those deepwater fish like tuna and swordfish. I know I used to eat sushi a lot back before I really understood the implication of what that can have. Children can also be born with mercury toxicity because it does pass through the placenta from their mom or later on it does pass through blood, breast milk as well. Copper toxicity and zinc deficiency are often associated with mercury toxicity as well. So again, if we don't see high levels of mercury, we might suspect it if we're seeing something like copper toxicity or zinc deficiency. Mercury affects our health in many ways, including cellular energy production, degeneration of nerve fibers, particularly sensory nerves that end up resulting in motor disturbances, headaches, rashes and emotional disturbances. And mercury has been shown to concentrate in the thyroid and pituitary glands and impair adrenal gland activity. I wouldn't be surprised when I get my hair tissue mineral analysis back. I sent it back. I sent it in at this point probably like a week or so ago. So I should be getting my results soon. I would not be surprised if mercury was high on mine and causing some of my thyroid issue. I expect that a heavy metal is going to come back on mine, at least one. I know I do not have a strong detox profile and I know now that I've exposed myself to a lot of heavy metals over the years, including my very large tattoos. They can often have heavy metals in them as well. Cadmium is one you hear about less, but it comes from many places. Food grown on cadmium containing contaminated soil from sewage sludge, fertilizers and irrigation water. Large ocean fish like tuna, cod and haddock, refined and ultraprocessed foods, processed meats, soda, instant coffee, cigarette smoke, motor oil, exhaust from cars, artist paints and air pollution from the incineration of rubber tires, plastics and paints are all high sources of cadmium. Children today are commonly born with cadmium toxicity passed on from the mother. And the reason why I keep mentioning children is because I do see this as a pretty prevalent issue for young children who are experiencing a lot of these health issues that we wouldn't expect. We've seen younger generations now have a shorter life expectancy than us, and we've also seen them presenting with a lot more of like these autoimmune conditions and things like that at very young ages. And I think that heavy metals have a huge role in that. So this is a very easy test that you can do with your kids because it's just taking a clip of their hair, right? So this is a very easy one to be able to test and see how are their minerals doing, how are their heavy metals doing. That is something that I could help you with as well. All of these metals cause huge issues and cadmium in particular could be to blame for everything from alopecia and anemia to atherosclerosis fertility issues, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, migraines, hypertension and kidney disease, to name a few. Arsenic is next. And unfortunately, inorganic arsenic is actually found in a variety of foods because it is in our soil from pesticides. There is organic arsenic as well. And several labs believe that arsenic is an essential element in small quantities. But that quantity is very undetermined and its functions aren't clear at this time. Arsenic can come from beer, table salt, water, paint, cosmetics, pigments, rat poison, glass and mirror manufacturing, fungicides, wood, preservatives and commercial chicken feed. High arsenic may result in abdominal pain, dermatitis, diarrhea, edema, fever, goiter, hair loss, headache, keratosis, kidney damage, liver dysfunction, muscle spasms, sore throat, vertigo and overall weakness. Thankfully, iodine and selenium are antagonist, which means that they block absorption if we have adequate amounts on board when exposed to arsenic. Unfortunately, iodine and selenium are ones that people are frequently low in. So you can see how these things can play a role. Like when we are at optimal health, our body can take care of a lot for us. Not everything, but it can take care of a lot. And last but not least, aluminum. Aluminum is everywhere. We know this beverage cans, food cooked in aluminum cookware or aluminum foil. Some antacids even have aluminum antiperspirants use aluminum to block your sweat glands, drinking water, baking powder, drying agents in salt and other spices, processed cheese, bleached, flour and fluoridated. Water increases the leaching of aluminum from pots and pans. Today, children are often born with elevated aluminum passed on from their mothers. If your children have a lot of these issues. It's worth doing this test to see what their heavy metal levels are. It really is. And like I said, this is an easy one to do on kids. Now, aluminum can be tricky because it likes to stay tightly bound within body tissues and you might need several months of a detox protocol to mobilize that aluminum. But as I said last time, there are other things we can look at and see if there might be a hidden toxicity here. Possible conditions associated with aluminum toxicity include flatulence, headaches, colic, dryness of skin and mucous membranes, frequent colds, burning pain in the head that is relieved by food, heartburn, anemia, Alzheimer's, dental cavities, dementia, kidney and liver dysfunction, neuromuscular disorders, Parkinson's disease and peptic ulcers. So it's pretty obvious here that heavy metals are no good for us, unfortunately. Fortunately it is fairly easy to do a heavy metal detox but you really need to do it under the guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner. As I've mentioned a couple of times, sometimes these metals are bound up in our body tissues and as they release, we might notice a worsening of symptoms and things of that nature that you really want to have a practitioner keeping an eye on you, with you to be able to assess the situation and know how to best support your body at different times. So that's the section on heavy metals tells us a lot. Very easy solution there, right? But again, needs careful monitoring because these can be particularly dangerous. The next section of the hair tissue mineral analysis is additional minerals or traits. Minerals. When we're looking at minerals we need to understand that there are seven macro minerals. We've talked about many of those already. Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, calcium, chloride and sulfur. We didn't talk about chloride and sulfur but those are our macro minerals, the larger minerals that we get. Then there are nine trace minerals chromium, copper, fluoride, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum I hate that one because I can't say it selenium and zinc. So we don't need these ones in terribly high amounts but we do need them on a regular basis. And then there are about 72 to 84 total trace minerals that are commonly found in seawater which is why we talk about things like sea salt a lot and why high quality salt can be really beneficial. My favorite brand is Redmond Brand and they get it from Utah and it is unrefined. So you get all of those trace minerals that we can't even they can't guarantee the amounts of what those minerals are in their salt. But you know that you are getting them and because we need them in such small amounts that's why they're called trace minerals. We need them in such small amounts. Using something occasionally like unrefined mineral salt is a great way to be making sure that you're getting those things. The additional minerals on the HtMa that we are looking at and wanting to assess is nickel, molybdenum, lithium and boron. Nickel has a tendency to accumulate in the kidneys, and other possible conditions associated with nickel toxicity include intestinal cancer, oral cancer, heart attack, hemorrhages, kidney dysfunction, low blood pressure, muscle tremors, nausea, vomiting, and skin problems. Cobalt. Oh, I miss cobalt in my original. This cobalt is another one that's on there for additional minerals. It is a byproduct of reducing nickel and copper. So it's something to keep an eye on. When we're correcting these imbalances, it's rare to see issues otherwise. It's also rare to see any of these actually within the optimal range on the hair tissue mineral analysis. But if they are very high, it does tell us something. So it's worthwhile to have them there, even though we don't often see them even within the optimal range on here, because, again, they're trace minerals. We need such small amounts. Molybdenum concentrates in the liver, kidney, and bone, and it's a powerful copper antagonist, meaning it will lower copper absorption. Symptoms often associated with excess are severe diarrhea, gout and copper deficiency, and other copper deficiency symptoms like skin problems, hair loss, growth, retardation, osteoporosis, thyroid, abnormality bone and joint issues, and weight loss. Lithium is often prescribed in the case of bipolar or manic depressive disorder. But in an otherwise healthy person, lithium excess can cause things like nausea, vomiting, tremors, excessive thirst, increased urination, thyroid swelling, weight gain, drowsiness, confusion, disorientation, delirium, skin eruptions, kidney damage, seizures, and can even be fatal. So there's a careful balance here when it comes to using lithium. Boron is beneficial, and I actually use this for a short period of time based on my naturopaths recommendations as it increases the production of estrogen and testosterone. And when I was very depleted at the end of last year, my testosterone was almost nonexistent. And so we use this for a very short period of time. It also can help to prevent osteoporosis and postmenopause symptoms. Excess is possible and might affect calcium metabolism and may cause osteoporosis instead, and increased urinary excretion of riboflavin. So, one of your B vitamins and one of our more crucial ones. So we definitely again, want to make sure we have this in a careful balance. Now, what the hell does all of this mean? Casey, you have rattled off so many things in these last two episodes, and I realized I was probably putting a bit more science in there, maybe than what you even wanted. But what does this all mean? Well, we need to look at the significant mineral ratios, and that is something that they put on this test. So I can calculate those by looking at all of your minerals and everything else, but they give me the ratios as well. And we want to make sure that everything is balanced and correct. What isn't for optimal functioning. So it's not just about having enough magnesium, having enough calcium, having enough potassium, having enough sodium. It needs to be in the correct ratios to each other. And then number two, if heavy metals are elevated, we need to do a detox to get rid of them because we can't work on correcting any of the other things if these heavy metals are causing issues. So the ratio of calcium and magnesium can show us stress. Where you are with stress, often when we see this ratio elevated, it's high stress. We see blood sugar, Dysregulation, tension, catabolism breaking down of cells, aggression or anger, potential anxiety, weakened immunity, lower energy, and overwhelm. The calcium to potassium ratio shows us what's going on from the chronic inflammatory stress, mental, emotional and physical. So that gives us an idea of how you are handling all of it. Looking at that ratio of calcium to potassium, the sodium to magnesium ratio helps us determine the level of endocrine balance, especially surrounding energy output. If you consider yourself, for example, a driven type A personality, this can actually be attributed to your sodium magnesium ratio. But you might also see so that's not always a bad thing, but if you find that it's particularly high for you, it might be because this ratio is actually off. You might also see hypertension here, insomnia, blood sugar Dysregulation, inflammation, fatigue, poor cardiovascular output, allergies, and poor adaptation to stress and exercise. Now, when we're looking at your sodium to potassium ratio, this can tell us about your stage of stress or adrenal maladaptation that I've been talking about a lot in this test. But both with the thyroid adrenal hormone test, if this ratio is high, it can tell us that you are in that high stress state. In addition to that calcium magnesium ratio, we can also look at this ratio to see whether or not you are in a high stress state. We will see some of the same kinds of issues anger, rage, aggression. We're going to see that alarm stage, possible resistance stage of stress here. We're going to see increased aldosterone output if we were doing a full hormone panel as well. And we're going to see things like water retention and a lot of stress on the kidneys when it comes to something like this. So again, when I'm looking at your results and I'm looking at these ratios and things like that, I know what these ratios can tell me, if they are elevated, but I'm also considering or deficient, I should say it could go either way. It tells me what's going on with your stress and how your body is handling it, but I also go by your symptoms. So with every single one of these functional lab tests, there's also an opportunity when you register your test to fill out the symptoms that you are having at that moment when you are taking that test. So when I get your results back, I not only have the results from the test, but I also have your list of symptoms and how you have rated them at the time of taking the test. Now, in the 60 day integrative health protocol that I am putting together for you, we also do an extensive 1 hour call intake. I have an intake form that you are going to fill out before we even do that call. And we are going to go through that intake with extreme detail to make sure that I have the full picture as best as I possibly can of what your health is at that time, because that really looking at the whole picture. In addition to these results is what helps me get you the best outcome and so what helps me customize this to you based on your lived experience and these lab results. I never consider these things in isolation, and I think that that's a really dangerous thing that a lot of doctors do. A lot of practitioners across the board is just they go by the labs and not necessarily how you are feeling. Sometimes your labs might be slightly off. They might be not optimal. But if you're still feeling okay and it's not in a place where it's going to cause alarm, then maybe we just need to do a couple of lifestyle changes and we don't need to be doing anything crazy or intensive in order to correct these things. So all of this comes together. Now, if you have a low sodium to potassium ratio, you might have a lower vitality here. You're going to have a lower mood, less zest for life. You're going to have feelings of hopelessness or weakness. We're going to see a lot of depression here when we're getting really low in this mineral ratio. We're going to see a lot of fatigue, poor adaptation to stress, and exercise, if you're someone who likes to exercise but all of a sudden, you just can't handle the physical exertion anymore, we're going to have poor cardiovascular output here and overall lowered immunity as well. So this tells us a lot when we're looking at the sodium to potassium ratio and really any of these ratios. Next up, we're going to look at your zinc to copper ratio. These two are antagonists to each other, right? We need to have them in the right ratio. And if we have too much zinc, we're not going to have enough copper. And if we have too much copper, we're not going to have enough zinc. So if the ratio is high of these, meaning that copper is low and zinc is very high, we're going to see that copper is probably lacking in the diet. High zinc could also be from heavy metal or candida toxicity, with zinc acting as an antagonist. So that tells us that there might be some other underlying causes here that we can figure out from this test. Heavy metals we can figure out from this test. Candida, you would need to do an organic acids test to be able to confirm that, but that helps point us in the right direction because that test costs more than a hair tissue mineral analysis, right? So we can start with the cheapest test and then be able to decide if one of those other tests, the organic acids, I don't think is too much more expensive. But we can decide then if that is the next course of action. High zinc could also be from a prolonged immune response or supplementation that is unabated by no or low copper supplementation. So I hardly ever recommend to just take zinc by itself. I usually would recommend, if you're going to do supplementation, to take a zinc and copper supplement to make sure that even though you might be needing to increase your zinc, you're balancing it out with that copper so that it cannot get too high. If you have a low zinc to copper ratio, this can sometimes happen with vegan diets. This is definitely possible here. And this is one of the things that we need to be mindful of for vegans. You need to be paying attention to that. Some things for every single kind of diet and lifestyle, supplementation is going to be necessary in certain places because you are just not going to get enough of certain things. But it can also be because of chronic stress, toxicity, too much exercise or exertion, too much sexual activity and gut issues. Remember I talked last time about how all of these things can have gut issues as the underlying cause for a lot of it. Because if you're not absorbing, no matter how much you eat, no matter how much you supplement, it's never going to work, right? You need to repair the gut then in that case so that you can be properly absorbing all of these things. Copper sources may also be contributing to the problem when you have a low zinc level, again, if copper is too high, it's going to push zinc lower. And some of those low zinc symptoms again are like white spots on the nails, flaking skin, poor hair, skin and nail growth, emotional instability, PMS symptoms, fertility issues, menstrual, irregularity fatigue, and low hormones like testosterone. So it's very obvious based on your symptoms, when this starts to become a problem. We're also going to look at calcium, phosphorus in the ratio to each other. So there's six different ratios and calcium. Phosphorus is the last one that we're going to look at to see exactly what it is that's going on here. If you have a high calcium to potassium or to potassium to phosphorus ratio, this is parasympathetic nervous system state, right? So this is high stress, this is alarm or resistance stages. This could be a signal that the body is trying to heal itself at this time. This might show us that it's an early on kind of response to stress for you at this point. So not necessarily. It's a great thing to be able to see, right? It's a great thing for us to be able to assess and see. It does show us that chronic stress is going on and it shows us exactly what stage that your body is at. It could also be because of poor absorption of phosphorus, which can be due to a couple of different things. Low protein. If you are not getting enough protein in your diet, this can be an issue for being able to absorb phosphorus. Poor digestion. Again, going back to gut issues, if you've got gut issues and you're not absorbing and digesting properly, then you're going to have problems with these minerals. It could be because of low levels of magnesium. It could be because of low levels of vitamin D. It could be low levels of B vitamins. So we need to really look at your whole nutrition picture here when we are assessing your calcium and phosphorus ratio, because there's a lot of things that can contribute to low phosphorus. Easily fixable, though, which is the great thing. All of the resolutions that we can get from this test, all the things that we would do to resolve the imbalances on this test are not complicated. We just need to know the right answer, right? We need to consider these ratios. We need to consider these things in conjunction with each other, in conjunction with your overall picture of health. It's a lot of things to consider. If you were trying to do this by yourself, I am sure it would be overwhelming. But that's why I've studied this, so that I can put it all together, because in conjunction with the other information that I have, the other certifications that I've done on nutrition and exercise and stress management and supplementation and emotional management, I have done the certifications on all of these things. So I can take all of this information and synthesize it into the perfectly customized protocol for you. Poor absorption of phosphorus may also be due to aluminum, mercury or lead, which we will see on this test as well. And there are some medications like cortisone or steroid that can have an impact, like allergy medications and things like that, that can have an impact on phosphorus as well. If you have a low calcium to phosphorus ratio, then we know we're in sympathetic nervous system state. So at this point, we are probably resistant stage, right? Parasympathetic is where we want to be, where things are not so elevated yet that our body is incapable of calming down. But when we get to sympathetic nervous state, that is activated alarm stage and or resistance stage, at this point, this is a place where one, it's an automatic response. Like we don't actually have control over whether or not it gets kicked on, but we can try to kick into that parasympathetic. And when we see that phosphorus is low in the previous ratio, that could mean that our body is trying to bring it down. Our body is trying. To relax and trying to heal. In this case, when we have low calcium and high phosphorus, we know that everything is elevated, all systems are go. This is from chronic stress. This is where we start to see more catabolism. So we see a lot of cellular turnover, cells breaking down, increased weakness. This is the stage that we are getting at at this point. Good absorption of calcium can be blocked by high processed carbs, sugar intake, low hydrochloric acid, so that stomach acid. And again, we're talking about digestion there. Like, this is going to have a big factor, stress and stomach acid blockers. So if you are on PPIs or anything to block stomach acid and we see some of these results here, well, it would be safe to assume that it might be time to start weaning off of those because they're affecting your absorption and your ability to get these vital minerals. Now, within these ratios and minerals, we also have different patterns that we can see. I'm not going to go through all of it because really, this is why I want you to take this test. I want you to take this test, I want you to do the 60 day protocol with me so that you can see these results and I can interpret the patterns for you. But there's something called the four high pattern where if your main electrolytes, calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium are all elevated, we're alarm stage. Right, this is all systems go. We are probably at the introductory phase here, which is a good thing. We're not so far gone yet, but something that we absolutely need to get under control as soon as possible. Then we have the too high, too low pattern. And in this one, we're headed towards that wired but tired kind of stage like, right, you're tired all day, you're dragging ass, but then at night you have a hard time falling asleep. This one again, easy to correct. We just need to know exactly what's going on here. If we see calcium and magnesium are elevated, potassium and sodium are lower, below normal, below the optimal range, then this is likely what is going on at this stage. With this pattern, then of course, we have the four low pattern and the four low pattern is going to be all of those main electrolytes are all below the normal optimal range. And this is where we are starting to see that burnt out stage. We are going to see a lot of different other things on this test that are probably showing us exactly where the issues are and how to correct these imbalances and some other things that we might need to look at even further. Whether or not we need to look at taking a gut test and figuring out what's going on there, just to rule out other factors. When we're looking at a burnt out stage, we really want to be getting at the root cause as fast as possible. I mean, we always want to be, don't get me wrong, but in this case, you're really not absorbing things properly at this point. You are not at adequate levels for your body to be functioning on any level. And it can be a very dangerous place to be when you're that depleted for long periods of time. So this is a great pattern to be able to recognize on this test that you wouldn't be able to recognize otherwise. This is where your doctor is going to tell you there's nothing wrong with you and you're just really stressed, but you are burnt the fuck out and your mineral levels are going to show that. Now, I did promise I was also going to talk about oxidation rate. There's fast oxidation, mixed oxidation, and slow oxidation on this test. If you are a fast oxidizer, it's typically found in babies and children, right? They burn through stuff a lot faster than the rest of us, which is why they need a lot more constant feeding and nutrition throughout the day than we do usually under the age of three to eight years. That's where we are going to see like true fast oxidation rates that are healthy and normal. A temporary fast oxidation rate is also called a slow oxidizer under stress, and this is almost always the case in anyone over the age of eight to ten years old. We are not supposed to be fast oxidizers after that point. Slow oxidation doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing. It is possible to have a healthy fast oxidation versus like what they call a tired fast oxidation where it's your body under stress and you're not normally operating at that rate. But again, we consider your oxidation rate in conjunction with everything else. So I'm not going to go into too much more detail there and bore you with the science. But this also tells us how quickly you are burning through things and again, just contributes to us at fully assessing your stage of stress that you are currently at. So let me just wrap this up by saying if you are a woman, very likely in my audience, if you are a woman who is on a mission to level up your well being and reclaim your vitality, you need to go purchase the 60 day Integrative Health protocol package right now. Because this is going to help you uncover some mind blowing insights that will absolutely revolutionize your health journey. This hair tissue mineral analysis gives us the inside scoop on your mineral levels, your imbalances, and your potential toxicities. We just have to take a few strands of hair and we can dive deep into your body's mineral status, which is a key player in your overall health, energy levels and emotional well being. If you have been battling things like sleep disturbances, stress, anxiety, mood swings, this is going to be the test for you to help expose the mineral imbalances that might be causing that chaos. Also, say goodbye to the fucking restrictive diets, right? And then imbalanced eating patterns that might be contributing to all of these things. I am going to help you come up with a plan that helps you with these nutrient deficiencies. Because of the work that I also do, you know, with nutrition, we are going to create a customized nutrition plan as well as any sort of supplementation that might be necessary. Based on the results from this test, we'll make sure you get the perfect blend of minerals to fuel your body, supercharge your metabolism, and optimize your overall nutrition.
