In light of the recent Gwenyth Paltrow interview that went viral because of her, obviously, disordered eating habits and her love for IV drips, I want to talk about the idea that we can biohack our bodies and health.

Should we really be focused on fitness trackers and IV drips and cold plunging and saunas and whatever the f*ck else people are suggesting when we don’t have a basic foundation of health in place?

Plus, find out the one biohack I do recommend to everyone who might be struggling with health or wanting to optimize it to live their best life.

[00:10] Kacey K: Welcome to the Simply Healthy You podcast, your place for overcoming overwhelm with your health to reach your fullest potential. I'm your host, Casey Canaan. I am so pumped to have you here. I'm a recovering burnt out high achiever who is diagnosed with an autoimmune thy a condition by my early thirty s. I didn't realize that running myself ragged in the name of being superwoman and determined to achieve all the things in life was killing my body. I created this podcast so that you don't have to continue the struggle like I did for over a decade. I sat down, studied the data, and simplified what it means to prioritize your own health needs so that you can be the best for all the things on your to do.

[00:50] Kacey K: List.

[00:50] Kacey K: Everything you hear on this podcast I have tested and implemented in my own super Pac life with my family to bring you the tips, tools and strategies that will keep your life simply healthy.

[01:06] Kacey K: Hello friend. Welcome to another episode of the simply healthy you. Podcast. I am so grateful to be infiltrating your brain with today's topic. My name is Casey Keane. I'm a certified Holistic Nutritionist with a Master's in Psychology and I'm here to bring you science based conversations to help you live a healthier and happier life. Quick Life Update I just finished level one of the Integrative Health Practitioner certifications that I am pursuing right now and started level two. The first level was so informative, helping much of it I didn't know, but it certainly has equipped me with some new protocols and tools to use with clients on their healing journey. So I'm very grateful for that. I'm most excited about level two because this is where I am learning how to deep dive into functional labs. I have some personal experience with a few of them, but I haven't used them all as they really are harder to come by. They weren't quite as accessible as they are today when I was in the beginning of my healing journey. So I haven't used all of them. I am looking forward to actually using some of them on myself because I think there are some things that I would like to further look into for my own health. So really excited to be learning about these functional labs and being able to have this as an option for my clients in the next couple of months. It's just something that I think even if you can find some functional medicine practitioners, not all of them necessarily do things the same way. And I talked a little bit about in the previous episode about supplements, how some of them still kind of follow that pill for an ill system and you end up with a million supplements instead. So I'm looking forward to being able to add this as a complement to the other things that I offer my clients and their healing journey because I do think there are situations where it can be really informative in light of the recent Gwyneth Paltrow interview that went viral because of her obviously disordered eating habits. And I know that there are a lot of jokes and things out there about it and I'm not going to specifically talk about the disordered eating here in this episode. But I do just want to say and recognize that as much as it seems crazy what she was talking about in that interview that she did, we have to recognize that there's a severely damaged individual in there. Like her mental health is clearly not stable. That's like a serious issue and just one of, I'm sure, many that have contributed to her having such a severe eating disorder and thinking that it is actually beneficial. And it's obviously largely concerning because she touts health and wellness stuff all the fucking time. She's got her whole brand and all the things that she does within the health and wellness space that it's just thankfully none of us can afford that shit anyway that she does. It's a very elitist kind of thing that she was even talking about the IV drips and all that kind of stuff. But I want to talk about the idea behind that interview that we can do these things to sort of biohack our bodies and our health. And if you haven't heard of biohacking, the term specifically, it's just really all of these things that people are starting to talk about in the health and wellness space that can be some kind of shortcut to our healing, to getting to the next level. My question here really is should we be focused on these things, even the simple things like fitness trackers, but people are talking about IV drips and cold plunging and saunas and whatever the fuck else, but should we really be focusing on those things if we don't have a basic foundation of health in place? Is this coming from an elite few at the top of the health and wellness industry who maybe have great intentions and maybe there are some benefits to some of these things, but it's one not accessible to most of us? Should that make us feel discouraged that we're never going to get to an optimal place with our health? And is this something that we should really be pursuing? Should we be making time to make appointments at Asana or float tub or any of these things? So I just want to talk about this a little bit today because I see this idea, whether we're talking about biohacking specifically or something else, we see these ideas out there of people shortcutting the road to healing. And I just don't think that that's possible. I don't think that there's a shortcut. But let's talk about this idea a little bit further. So I just looked up one, I Googled and picked up the first article about biohacking just to give you some examples of what people are talking about out there if you haven't seen a lot of it, or if you have and kind of wondering like, what is exactly? I mean, it's kind of a pretty general term, but this is just one article that I found from MedicalNews today and they say biohacking is a term used to describe do it yourself biology. It involves people making incremental changes to their bodies, diet and lifestyle to improve their health and well being. Well, right there it actually sounds pretty positive, doesn't it? So biohacking, they say, ranges from efforts to improve brain function to faster weight loss. And this is where we start to see things kind of go off the rails, right? Some types of biohacks are relatively safe to try at home, while others may pose health risks and produce varying results. So again, what are we getting at here? Lots of things that could or could potentially not work for certain individuals and some that could present other health risks without knowing if it's something that you specifically should be implementing. So again, going back to this idea that saying like cold plunging is great for everyone and everyone should be doing it because it has all these benefits, well, that's not fucking true. We actually don't have data to support that. We have some data to support how it might be beneficial in certain circumstances. But no, I don't think you should go out and get a cold plunge tub or even turning your shower at the end of your shower to cold. These are not just blanket. I don't think that these are blanket statements that anybody should be making about what we can possibly do to biohack and shortcut things. So some of the examples that they have in this article of what biohacking is because they're basically saying it's a DIY form of human enhancement, right? Some kind of way to improve your health, to optimize your body, your functioning. We see lots of technology based things, right? We know that things like smartwatches and fitbits and all of this technology where we're trying to gather data about our body and be able to tweak our health and our athletic performance. Yeah, that's sort of a form of biohacking. Right? I could see that. I like data that can be helpful information. Right. Are they absolutely accurate? No. Are some of them getting a lot better? Sure. Do I use one? Absolutely. I have the aura ring because I can shut it off. I don't want that shit coursing emf through my body all day long so I can put it on airplane mode. And only when I put it on the charger does it sync with my phone so I don't have to worry about that stuff pulsing through my body all the time. And aura does a pretty good job of giving me some pretty useful data. I can see when my heart rate is elevated at night and when I might not have recovered from stress well and from exercise and things. But is this going to shortcut my ability to improve my health and optimize it? No, I don't think so. I think these are data points. Right? So helpful, but not a shortcut. This isn't a biohack here. This isn't like some insight that we couldn't also get from waking up in the morning and being like, wow, I slept for a lot of hours, but I don't feel very well rested. Do I need to know that my heart rate exactly was elevated? Or could I possibly glean from the other things going on in my life and the way that I'm taking care of myself that maybe my body was extra stressed? Right. I like it, I use mine, I use my aura ring. But is it really helping me biohack? I don't really know. Right. Some other examples that they talk about are neurotropics, which is smart drugs, if you will quote air quotes. They're talking about supplements, drinks, foods, all these things. When you're talking about non prescription ones that could potentially boost brain performance or weight loss or any of these things. This is where we get this giant supplement industry that I just did the last episode on. If you didn't listen to that one, go listen to that one. About my thoughts on supplements. This is where we get all this stuff from and all these MLMS and their collagen powders and drinks and antioxidant powders and all this stuff, right? I do think that there's a small part of it. Again, just like the fitness trackers, I think there's a small part of this that has a place in our life. Supplements have a place in our life. But can we use them to biohack? Can we use it to get at some kind of biological functioning that we wouldn't have otherwise? I don't really know. We need supplements because our soil is depleted and supplements can help us heal in acute cases. But you still have to do the other work. You still have to be taking care of yourself. Otherwise this isn't going to be the key to your healing. This one thing is not going to be the key to your entire healing journey. People have talked about Creatine a lot and that's definitely one that I am looking into more. And I think there are definitely some benefits to taking something like Creatine. We're seeing more and more that it can be very beneficial, especially for women and especially for brain function. Is that a biohack in and of itself or is that just a supplement that can be useful in optimizing your health on your journey? I don't know. This is the conversation, this is the debate we're having today. Then there are prescription nootropics and they are medications that have like a stimulant effect to it. Some of the examples are things that they use to treat ADHD and some of those stimulant medications like Adderall and things like that. They talked about one in this article used to treat Alzheimer's disease. This is where we get into really dangerous territory, right? Should you be using these if you don't have a medical reason to? And honestly, should people really be getting prescribed these at all? In some cases. There is a lot of risk here to it. So are you biohacking? Are you shortcutting something? Are you tapping into something in your body that you wouldn't otherwise be able to by taking the Adderall to improve your focus and brain function? Or could you possibly fuel your brain properly in a different way to try to get the same impact? Right? Do we want to go that route? I don't really know. So these are some of the examples that they had. Some other things that they talked about in here is like magnetic implants in people and under the skin and all that kind of crazy stuff. People are going to some insane lengths to take this biohacking stuff. Electronic tattoos, this biohacking stuff is really getting out of control. I wasn't even aware of some of these things until I read this article doing the research for this episode. So it's kind of crazy. Some of the types of biohacking that we see there are three most popular types and DIY biology, nutrigenomics and Grinders, which I had no idea what that was until I saw this. DIY biohacking is really experts in scientific fields sharing biohacking techniques and information with people who are not experts. So this allows more people to conduct experiments on themselves outside of a constrained environment. Some people kind of in this article, they said some people consider this to be an open revolution against the academic institutionalization of science. And I can agree with this to a certain extent, right? I talk here a lot about how a lot of the conventional medicine stuff that we see is not necessarily a good fit for the disease that we see today. However, do I think that we should be going against the institution of science? No, I don't think that. I know better than the scientific studies that we've been seeing coming out for decades now at this point that point us to healthy nutrition habits and lifestyle and all of that kind of thing. Some of the things that fall under this category of DIY biology that they created here is microbiology nutrition and biomedical and synthetic biology. I'm going to much more focus on the nutrition piece for my aspect of things. I do think that there is a lot to be said for what nutrition can do for your health. Now again, do I consider that biohacking? No, I don't think that there's a magic food that you can eat that is going to unlock something in your body that you couldn't otherwise tap into with other foods. This is the problem I have with this whole biohacking thing is that these little things that you do is going to turn on some kind of switch that immediately optimizes your health and just turns you into robot performance status where nothing gets in your way and you are just living your best life every second of the day. I don't buy into that. The nutrigenomics piece of the types of biohacking is another type that focuses on how food interacts with people's genes. This is another one. I think there's a little bit of validity to it. You may have heard about the blood type diet. There is some genetic testing that can show you possibly some things that might be more advantageous for your body type, if you will. One of the things that I've learned a lot about in these certifications that I'm doing right now is Ayurveda and Chinese medicine and they focus a lot on body types and things like that. Not with genetic testing. Just by looking at you and kind of what your body type seems to be based on your frame. And there is some evidence to support that the way your body responds to food could have a genetic piece to it. Right. Some of us are just going to be higher burners than others. Some of us are just going to hold weight in certain places more than others. There are some genetic factors there. Is it something where you need to know your genetic makeup in order to figure out an optimal diet for yourself? No, I don't think so. I don't think we need to be paying for expensive genetic testing in order to decide how we are going to eat breakfast today, what food we are going to put on our plate. So much of this really just boils down to being in tune with your own body and listening. Like when you eat something, how do you feel? Even if it's fucking kale, even if it's something that is super nutrient dense, whole food, like supposed to be really great for a number of vitamins and minerals, whatever. How do you feel after you eat that? And that can say a lot about what's going on with your health and can also say a lot about whether or not that's a food that is going to work with your body. It's the same with food sensitivity tests. I don't think that we should just be cutting everything out that shows up on food sensitivity tests. Does it potentially show us an irritation in our body being caused by some of those foods? Yeah, for a short period of time. Maybe we should eliminate them, let the irritation come down and figure out what the root cause of that issue is. Because you're not supposed to be sensitive to foods. You're not. You're not supposed to have these kinds of sensitivities to foods unless you have an actual allergy to things. So do we need to be doing DNA testing to figure out what to eat every day? No. Or how to exercise? No. I don't agree with that. And then Grinders was the third type of biohacking they had in this article and it is biohackers who consider themselves pioneers of human augmentation. And this is the one where I was telling you it involves devices implanted under the skin and the use of technology to perform body modifications. Like, that shit sounds fucking crazy and like you're turning yourself into some kind of AI being. So, no thank you, I do not want to sign up for that. So what does it come down to? Who cares about what all the biohacking things are? You're going to see health and wellness influencers out there, practitioners, people talking about all these different kinds of things. The most prevalent ones I see today. And I know I am immersed in this industry, so I probably see it a lot more than you do. But you've probably seen people talking about saunas, you've probably seen people talking about cold plunging, you've probably seen people talking about IV drips aside from Gwyneth Paltrow for like vitamin boosts and things like that. There are hubs popping up, right? They're opening up shops all over the place. Sauna stuff has been around for a while and I think that there are pieces of each one of these things that can be very beneficial, but are so extremely niche. Like the people that it helps and at what point in your healing journey it helps you is so critical to the success of these modalities. These are not just modalities that every single person should just go hop into a sauna and all is going to be good. If you do not have the right environment in your body for you to be sweating stuff out and taxing your body in a sauna, that could be very dangerous. It can. And that's why you have to sign forms before you go into these places and go into the saunas and things like that. Not to mention the mold issue that can happen with Saunas and everything else. You need to make sure they're clean, blah, blah, blah. Right, but do these things actually work? Yeah, there's probably some studies that show that in certain populations and probably really small sample sizes, that there are some potential benefits to these things. But is this what you should be focused on? Is this the best way for you to be optimizing your health right now? Some of the other one that people would consider biohack is intermittent fasting. And I did an entire episode, a few back at this point on fasting and when you should be using it and how you should be using it. It's definitely an advanced healing protocol. The popularity of intermittent fasting because it's also used to extremely cut people's calories and the diet industry was like, yes, intermittent fasting sounds healthy, looks healthy. We can tell people it's really good for them and this is another diet that we can sell now. We can create another diet program intermittent fasting. Is that something that you need to be tapping into? I mean, go back and listen to that episode. But the quick version is I typically only recommend a twelve hour overnight fast to most of my clients and that's it. I think there are ways that it can work for women, but it also can be very dangerous for women. You should not be fasting in the morning. You need to be eating. That's not a biohack. It's allowing your body to do what it is supposed to do by giving it rest overnight, not eating late at night. These aren't biohacks just because our current system, we are so far removed from our bodies and listening and tuning in to the way that it is supposed to be naturally functioning and that we aren't meant to be eating for more than 12 hours a day. Our body needs needs the rest and repair overnight. Right, so is that biohacking? No, I think that's a way for people to make money off of you. Cold water therapy and cold water plunges. I think that's a way for people to make money off of you because they want you to buy these special tubs and all that kind of stuff. And like yeah, people are making cold plunge tubs out of anything. If you live near a body of water, you could go to it there every single day. But there's a lot of risk that comes with cold water therapies and cold water plunging. There can be benefits to your cardiovascular system, your immune system, endocrine system, mental health, all those things. Yeah, it can positively affect some of those things, but it depends on the person. It depends on your health situation. You can also get hypothermia, you can also get cold shock. There are a lot of risk factors. And if you have an underlying condition that you were completely unaware of that is causing some of the symptoms that you are experiencing, this can be really dangerous. This is not a way to optimize your health. So what is the best way to biohack your health? Because I do think there is one way that if you really want to optimize your health and you want to do it as fast as possible, you need to hire someone. You need to hire someone who has done exactly what you want to be doing or who teaches exactly what you want to be doing or how you want to be living your life. Truly, that is really the only hack is to hire someone who has the steps that you want to take. Truly, that is the only hack because that is hiring someone who has the knowledge that you're looking for or that the things that you have researched yourself and the things that you are trying to implement and the things that you are trying to change and they have proven and effective strategies for how to get where you want to be. That's the only shortcut. That's really the only shortcut that you can take. What has taken me years to learn and implement for myself, decades, really takes my clients a matter of months because they get to benefit from my mistakes, from my missteps, from my failures, and from my successes. Does that mean I'm only using my personal data and experience to support the strategies I use with my clients? Absolutely fucking not. That would be ridiculous. That would be dumb. I mean, there are a lot of people out there doing that. There are a lot of influencers who are thinking like, I did the keto diet and my whole diet is my whole life has transformed and now I'm going to tell everybody that they need to eat keto and I'm going to teach everyone and create a program. The beauty of social media is that we have the opportunity to create businesses out of nowhere. The downfall is that we also have the ability to create businesses out of nowhere and some people should be put back in their place and not doing that anywho. I'm not using just my personal data when I'm working with my clients. It's dozens of books and research studies and hundreds of hours and multiple degrees and multiple certifications, countless webinars and podcast episodes that I've listened to from all over the health and wellness industry to bring you the best of the best, right? And I am one of those people who fully believes in not operating in an echo chamber. I follow people who I actually disagree with some of their basic values on how they implement things in the health and wellness space. And I follow people that I agree with and then I follow some people who I feel are a little bit off the reservation, but because I want to see and I want to use that in conjunction what we're seeing coming out in the scientific data and see what makes the most sense. The only way I can bring you the best of the best is if I'm paying attention to as much as I possibly can. And I know I am a unique person in this and that many of us try to take in all of this information and it becomes very hard and very overwhelming very quickly. And it's not to say that I don't get to that point, but my brain functions on such a different level of really being able to absorb these things and synthesize this information to bring my clients the best. And that's why I started this business. I mean, those of us who will stay successful in this industry and actually are helping people will be successful over the long term. Those other people are all going to fizzle out because eventually people will figure out that they are a fraud and no one is getting lasting results with them. And I do believe that karma will come back and bite them in the ass for that. I never stay stuck in my ways of thinking because at any point science can show us something different. But I am always staying at the forefront of what the decades of industry science shows us. Not just one study, not just one meta analysis, not just what one specific person is saying, but the massive trends that haven't changed, really, despite what the media and diet industry want you to believe. That's what I'm paying attention to. Where do we see these trends? Where does the data continue to prove the same thing over and over and over again? I do think some of this biohacking, if that's what you want to call it, has a place and a time. I'm all about paying attention to nutrition. The things that you put into your body are absolutely important and you eat multiple times a day. That has a huge component. And I think that there are some genetic factors that play into this for a small portion of people. And like I said, I spoke in the last episode about supplements and how I believe they do play a role in healing and overall wellness. But before you go starting cold plunging or saunas or ivy drips, you need to focus on your foundation. If nothing else from this episode, I really just want to hammer home that you need a foundation of health before you try implementing any of these specialty niche things that, to be honest, are going to cost you a hell of a lot more money than they're probably worth. Those things might benefit you at some point, but not when you're not eating 17 whole food plant servings a day. Not when you're not getting 8 hours of sleep at night, not when you're not doing 30 minutes of daily movement, not when your stress levels are out of control, not when you have leaky gut and you aren't absorbing. Nutrients properly. Not when your hormones are out of balance. Not when you're still afraid to eat fats or carbs and you restrict entire food groups from your diet. Not when your mental health is suffering. Do you get the point? Do you get the point? There are so many things that are just a part of a foundation of optimal health that you can't skip. You can't biohack that stuff. These are strategies that are so far down the road for so many of us that we shouldn't even be paying attention to them. But these influencers and even practitioners that talk about these things, they know that they can sell it as the secret pill, the secret powder, the secret potion that is going to get people the results that they haven't been able to see yet. Because why? Because the other road is harder. The other road is slower and it's harder and it doesn't sound fucking sexy. It's why my job becomes so fucking hard sometimes. It is not the sexiest thing to be like. Hey, let's go the slow road, but let's do it the right way. That's why the marketing aspect of what I do is probably something I loathe the most. I never went to school for any sort of marketing or sales or any of that kind of stuff, so it's well outside of my comfort zone. But the other part of it is it's not sexy. And I'm out here, my little drop in the corner of social media and the Internet and the world, trying to tell people that slow and steady wins the race. And while in our heart of hearts we logically know that to be true, it's really hard when your list of priorities is so fucking long and trying to balance all the things that you are doing in your life. It's hard. It's hard to sell this. It's so much easier to say, hey, let's start doing some cold plunging, right? And this is going to be the thing that unlocks your fat loss and supports your immune system, and it's going to be fantastic, right? This is why even though I'm so freaking pumped to have functional labs available to clients in the next couple of months, I'm still going to make you go through Simply Healthy Academy. So if you've been excited about labs, great. Get enrolled in the next round of Simply Healthy Academy, because that's my signature group coaching program where we transform your foundation. I'm not about to start treating every single biomarker that shows up on your labs that shows out of optimal range if 90% of them can be taken care of with changes to your diet, lifestyle, and mental health. I'm just not about doing that. I'm not going to sell you the things just to make money off of the supplements and the tests. And you don't want that either. You really don't. It seems like it seems like it's easier to get the tests and get the pills because we're so used to this pill for an ill system, because it feels a lot fucking easier. There are no miracle pills, though. There's no miracle pills, powders or potions. I say this all the time. It's a combination of the efforts that you put into your own life in conjunction with the right healing protocols. That's what it boils down to. There's no biohacking. The work that you will have to do if you're serious about changing your health today and in the future, the pain of where you are today or where you might be in the future if you don't put in the work has to be greater than your excuses. This is hard work, and I tell my clients that all the time, because so much of the time we can feel defeated so quickly on this journey. And it is why mental health is such a huge component of Simply Healthy Academy. Because we can get so frustrated when five months go by and tons have changed, but so many things that we wanted to see changed are not. And that's not how it works. You can't transform decades of living in your body in five months and anyone who markets it that way is just fucking lying. If it wasn't hard, it wouldn't be worth it, but it also wouldn't be the optimal way to do it. It wouldn't be the sustainable way to do it, but it doesn't have to be complicated. I apologize for the stuffy nose that you might be getting in the background of this episode. We're having some allergies going on here. It's been raining so much here in central Indiana and everything is starting to grow and like all of us are just allergy anyway, so it doesn't have to be that complicated. Lucky for you, if you're listening to this in real time, simply Healthy Academy, my signature group coaching program, is about to open for enrollment on Thursday, April 6. And since you're listening here today, if you're listening on Tuesday or Wednesday, you are still able before we open up to the public to lock in a $250 discount. But once April 6 is here, that discount is gone and it's full price for the program. All you have to do right now is click the link at the bottom of this episode and submit an application that does not lock you into anything except the discount should you decide to enroll. If you know full well this is right for you, casey, I've been listening to you for a while. Or hey, this is my first episode. But you know what, you sound smart. You sound like you know what you're talking about. I'm going to sign up for your program. I believe in you, love you for that. That's definitely the way to go. Get that application in. Let's fucking go. I'll reach out to you with details if you're ready to go after I get your application and you'll be all set and getting started. If you still have questions though, that's normal, I get it. This is an impossible space to navigate at times and understanding what is going to work for you and should you trust someone, I hope I can be that person that you can trust and that's why I do the podcast and so much free content over on my Instagram as well and to my email list. I hope that I become someone that you can trust to help steer you in the right direction with your health. If you still have questions, I get it. You have the option of booking a no obligation call with me to get those questions answered and feel 100% certain that this is going to be the right program for you. After you submit the application, a link will pop up on your screen and you will be able to book a call right then and there to get all of those questions answered. And this is not a sales call. I'm not going to be hammering it home to you and pitching you nonstop. We know what we're having a conversation about here, and I want to make sure that you feel absolutely certain that this is the right next step for you.
